I have an ASrock Z97X Fatal1ty Killer (great board btw) and I currently have 2 x 4 Gb G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600 Mhz. I would like to add more ram and wondering if I can do 2 x 8 Gb sticks and 2x 4 Gb sticks. Also would I need to take out the motherboard from my build and unplug the computer to install it or can I keep it plugged in but shutdown and the motherboard in the PC. Can I also mix up the ram brands such as having G.Skill and Corsair ram in the same rig and what happens if I have a 1600 Mhz ram and 1866 ram in my build?

Solution
As mentioned, there are no guarantees when mixing sets of DRAM - if they will play together, then yes they can run in dual channel, would place them going out from CPU 8-4-8-4 which puts 12GB in each channel. Just shut down the rig, unplug and install the stick then give it a try, if they play they will boot up to 1333 or 1600, from there they will run at whatever you can set them to where they will still play

ok. let's go:
1.-that motherboard can handle up to 32 GB, so you are good to go
2.-if you use 2x4 and 2x8 modules i am not sure they will operate at dual channel.
3.-you can install the RAM with the motherboard installed, but be sure to turn the computer off AND UNPLUG IT.
4.-1600 and 1866 ram modules can be installed togheter, but they both will work a 1600.

To be 100% sure everything will work you need to buy everything in a kit, if your wanting 16Gb get a 2x8GB kit if your wanting more the get a 4x8Gb kit. Mixing ram even 2 2x4gb of the same make and model kit at the same time can cause issues. When mixing sizes, brands, speeds, or even cl #'s your chances of issues go up. In your case mixing brands, size, speed and most likely cl #'s you will be asking for issues.
