Looking to get rid of my fx-6300 this Christmas and want to know what you guys think will be better for me! Right now the fx-6300 isn't giving me the performance i need in CS:GO and in guild wars 2. I am thinking of going with the i3-4170 as an upgrade or even maybe overclock one of those new Pentiums. Not really sure what will give be a better boost in performance. Was also looking at an i5-4460 if i can find a cheap motherboard to keep the cost down. So what do you guys think would be the best out of the i3 and the pentium?

Solution
The fact that the Pentium is $60 and the i3 is twice the price is telling. Although even a Pentium overclocked to heaven won't match the performance of an i3 thanks to the i3's hyper threading. Getting either the Pentium or the i3 won't be really an upgrade though.

i5-4460 would be a very nice choice. It is 4 actual cores which are very powerful and all the work on the computer will be distributed allowing the game to reach the highest possible FPS.

Pentium and i3 would be best for CS:GO if you are on a budget. i5 will be a great all around CPU.

If you want to get i5-4460, this mobo would be the best: *EDIT* I deleted the motherboard suggestion

The cheapest mobo that is like - buy it and dont worry about it - is the MSI P33. It is...

Don´t even consider pentium CPU, it won´t translate into a meaningful upgrade.

I´d suggest an i5 core with a cheap mobo like MSI H81M-P33 for $28.99, it will be a much more futureproof investment. Consider the k-series chip as well, if you want to overclock your chip with even greater gain, but remember an air cooler, like CM Hyper 212 evo or Noctua NH-14 (around 30 bucks)
