Hey everyone

I'm going to bite the bullet and pick up a 5820k + mobo tomorrow from scan.co.uk but I'm a bit worried about the power supply being pushed to its limits. Has anybody on here ran a 5820k with a pair of overclocked GTX 780s on an 850W Gold rated PSU? Or does anybody have accurate estimations on the power draw?

I'm currently running a 3570k @ 4.4GHz, GTX 780s, a pair of hard drives and a water pump + 4 case fans and the EVGA Supernova 850G2 (about a year old) never seems to care, so would the 5820k make much difference? I believe it is about 140W max but I plan on overclocking.

Cheers

I think a single GTX 780 will use something like 200-250w in something like Metro benchmark, but I'm not sure what a secondary card would run.

I could be cutting it close under heavy load if I overclock the 5820k then, everyone seems to tell me something different so I'm not sure what to do.

For efficient and 'safe' usage, I want to keep my system load 70% or less of the maximum PSU rating. That would be a total of about 600W for your 850W PSU. It's a really good PSU, so I might stretch a little.

Overclocking a GTX 780 can push it's power consumption up by over 50W at the wall.http://www.anandtech.com/show/6980/nvidia-geforce-gtx-780-overclocking-results so your two GTX 780s could be drawing another 80W or so from your PSU.

This http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2014/09/03/intel-core-i7-5930k-and-core-i7-5820k-revie/8 is what an overclocked 5820K can do and need, over 200W on full load.

So, you have a great PSU, but what you want to do is pushing its 12V rails beyond where I would want to go. If you are in the USA, the excellent XFX-P1-1050-BEFX, a Gold 1050W PSU is available for just under $100.

I would look at selling off the old PSU or re-purposing it into a new system.

Ok thanks guys, I did have a HX1050 'Pro' but it started making some really scary noises after about a year so I replaced it with this EVGA unit, kind wish I'd swapped it for another 1050W now.

To be honest I'm now just doubting the 5820k on the basis that all I do is use Kodi+PVR for live TV and play games like Assetto Corsa, GTA and ARMA etc, so would a 4790k be better for me? There's no way I'm paying the current price for a 6700k as it's daylight robbery. I'm guessing the 4790k will be easier on my PSU too.
