I recently purchased a sapphire nitro r9 after being told on this site it would work with my xfx pro 550w. However the gpu won't even turn on, I am afraid It may have even gotten fried. What psu would be best for this gpu and a radeon FAX 8320?
Yeah, just saw in another thread it recommends 750w. Dunno why the dude told me my old psu would be fine, its far from it. Now to find a good brand at a reasonable price. Do you happen to know of one? The reviews on the ones I have looked at (corsair, rose will) are a mix of good and bad, its hard to decide. Also, do you think my new gpu has been damaged due to the wrong psu being used, I mean, it doesn't SMELL burnt.
Which psu would have the correct 8 pin connector I need?
I doubt anything is wrong or any damage has occurred. If it never had enough power to turn on (missing pins), then I'm sure you're safe. For a good brand that fits your bill....as others mentioned, there are several acceptable choices. This one at $80 (after...

Was windows 10 64 bit but my drive lost data so now I need a boot disc. Using an old laptop HD with vista on it.
Not overclocking.
Yes. The pins were 6 pins, 2 cords. It was an upgrade, using old gpu atm. Cannot access my old hard drive, I may have broken it trying to fix the issue. It blue screens and asks for a boot disc. Using old laptop HD atm in my PC. So my PC is severely crippled atm. Can not even go online on it, the adapter claims to be broken. However I assume that's just because I am using the old pos HD and not my original one.
you cant just swap your old laptop drive into your present build.while it may not be causing all your problems its certainly making it almost impossible to diagnose your problem.now your dealing with the symptoms caused by the old vista drive as well as your graphics problems.you first need to reinstall your os on either your existing hdd if it works or on a new hdd.
I know it was a dumb thing to do, but I couldnt really think of another way that would not cost me a hundred dollars.t my old HD doesn't work til I get a boot disc, which is hard considering my windows 10 was the free upgrade. Do you know which psu would be best for my setup?
that's a 390 right? i am not familiar with current amd series, but i don't think a 550w can handle it. what is the official power req stated in the sapphire website? maybe that's your issue

Which r9 do you have? I was thinking you had the r9 390 nitro which uses 2 8-pin connectors.

Ok, so do this. Put the old GPU back in and get into the UEFI/BIOS (no drive necessary to get into the BIOS). I would like to know what version of the BIOS you were running and what the old GPU is/was.
And Fx 6950 was my old card. It was the sapphire nitro I am trying to use, it does seem to use 8 pins. Even though i was told on here my psu supported it. It looks like it doesnt. Do you know what psu I should use? It might be a simple fix (outside of reinstalling windows 10) I really don't wanna take the PC to a shop.

So then the PSU still works and can power up your old GPU?
For appropriate size, 650w would be a minimum but 700-750 is more ideal if you ever intended to use the AI Suite 'performance' tools for your CPU or overclock your GPU. Here is a guide to use for quality tiers too:

get a tier 1 or 2 psu (usually seasonic, xfx, corsair, et al) and you are good to go. as i stated in my post, on top of my head a 550w is not enough since this is not a mid range card anymore

EDIT: For pin count, either 8pin or 6+2pin are what you're looking for (6+2 just means that two pins can remained unplugged with GPUs that only require 6pins at the connection point).
