So currently I have a 8 gigs of 2133mhz that I downclocked to 1600mhz @ 9 9 9 24.

I'm thinking of adding more memory for this coming Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales because they are super cheap now :D

Can I purchase any ram, 16g or 8g, with any speed from 1600mhz to 2133mhz with any CL timings, and just manually adjust them same to my current 8 gig ones? I've been in tech area for quite a while now so I think it should work, but just wanted to hear some confirmation.

TL;DR, let's say I bought 16 gigs of 1866mhz at 9 10 9 28, and downclocked it to 1600mhz at 9 9 9 24, which is my current ram spec, will it run fine?
and same voltage of course

Solution
There is never any guarantee that different memory sticks will play nice together, with or without tweaked speeds. Even modules of the exact same type sometimes do not work when purchased separately. The only guarantee is to buy a kit. Most of the time it is fine, but your mileage may vary.

hm yeah I suppose it'd be a gamble.
I'll probably just end up getting 16 gig 1866mhz and try to match the speeds and see if they like each other.
If not, then I'll just stash the 8gig somewhere :p
Thanks!
