I am salvaging a couple parts from my current stock PC and putting together a new build, my first build. Right now my PC kind of sucks, a lot more than I thought it ever would, though it wasn't purchased for gaming, which is what I'm using it for now.

Anyway, I have recently gotten into livestreaming, so that's what my new build will be for, but it's a budget build. I realize it won't be able to do top notch gaming, and for now I'm okay with that.

The GT 740 4GB was recommended by a friend based on price and the fact that it has 4GB, but I've been looking into it and some say the GTX 750 Ti 2GB is better for only a small price increase. The 4GB on the GT 740, according to what I've read, is a moot point because the card doesn't have the power to utilize it. Is this a fair statement?

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Within the next week.
BUDGET RANGE: Up to $140

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming and Livestreaming on Twitch. Game examples: Skyrim, Ark, Savage Lands, GW2, Dishonored (Mostly open-world type games)

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: Radeon HD 7350 1GB DDR3. Power supply for the new build is EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W.

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: CPU = AMD FX 8 Core (I'll have to check the specifics)
CPU Cooler = Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 74.3 CFM
Motherboard = Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+
Case = Deepcool TESSERACT SW ATX Mid Tower
RAM = 16GB

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Not picky, but I use NewEgg(US) frequently.

PARTS PREFERENCES: AMD

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1280x960 (I believe)

If you have other card suggestions, I am more than happy to take suggestions beyond these two I've selected.

For the moment I don't plan using more than one monitor, and right now I just want to be able to run the dang games.
Savage Lands, which isn't well optimized yet since it's early access, I have to run on the lowest settings, and yet it is still extremely laggy.
Ark isn't even playable. The lowest settings and I get lag as well as stuttering audio, not to mention the lowest graphic settings for that game make me feel like I'm driving down a country road without my contacts...which would be illegal.

Anyway, I found the specs for my current card. It is a Radeon HD 7350 1GB.

yes, even though the 740 has more vram, the gtx 750 ti is just much faster

for $140 though you should be looking at a gtx 950

He's not really playing games at a very high resolution (only 1280x960) so maybe he can save some money on the gpu and later buy a better monitor.

I'm female. ;)
Anyway, I do need to upgrade my monitor eventually, but it's not a priority at the moment. The 750 Ti is what, $120 last I looked? If I can get a better card for just $20 more I definitely will.

I'm sorry haha, but I live in Europe so I have no idea about prices in the USA. But I would check the prices of both 750ti and gtx 950 and look up gaming performance. So for example go to youtube and search for your specific CPU (can be found under: Control Panel\System and Security\System) and the 750ti/950 and then the name of the game. That way you can really see the difference in settings and fps for both graphics cards.

I've been watching so many videos I think my head is going to spin.

So far, the 750 Ti and the 950 are fairly similar in terms of performance, and there is roughly a $10 price difference. From what I've seen, 950 would be the one to go with for a new build, but if someone were looking to upgrade from a 750 Ti, it wouldn't be worth it.

From there I started looking into the 960 SSC from EVGA because it is only $20 more than the 750 Ti due to all these end of November sales. That goes over my budget by about $10, but that's fine. Heck, I'm tempted to go with the 960 FTW 4GB, but that's $50 more and I think that would be better spent on upgrading other components. (Like my monitor...which I just realized is around 7 or 8 years old...)

Between the 960 SSC (stock) and 750 Ti (OC), the 960 has almost twice the consistent FPS performance as the 750 Ti. It runs a bit hotter, but not enough to be considered a drawback.

I wasn't able to find any videos with my CPU alongside either of these cards, probably because it's a few years old.

Based on this information, I'm going to go with with the 960 SSC by EVGA.

Thanks for the suggestions, especially the YouTube comparisons. Those were definitely helpful. :)

Okay, great! If you have the money I would go for the 4gb 960, it's an amazing card and will definitely last you a couple of years. If you have an SLI compatible motherboard, you can even add a second 960 a few years for added performance. Next upgrade would definitely be your monitor haha!

Maybe she wants to upgrade to multiple monitors later, so it is a really future-proof card.

I'm going to stick with the 2GB 960 for now. I was very tempted to pick the 4GB, but I think this one will serve me fairly well. I really need that extra money to put into other things. A monitor for sure. ;)

Also, I was able to get my 960 for almost half price thanks to all these sales. I'm not going to complain about that one bit.
