Take harddrive from prebuilt, use adapter to access photos, etc. on laptop?

Im moving and I have a prebuilt system that i have tax info, pictures, etc. on. Can i just buy a usb adapter so i can plug it into my laptop to access my stuff? I dont want to lug an entire desktop around.

Assuming this is a 3.5" HDD, you will need a powered USB adapter/cable/enclosure.

You can probably access the 'files' You can't use the applications on it.
