Any reason that I get better latency on online multiplayer games on my PS3 compared to my PC?

We have satellite internet, which I know is horrible for gaming, but it's all that's available to me outside of the city. I just really want to know why it is that I get a better connection on all of my online multiplayer games on my PS3. On PC my ping is always around 100-200, sometimes spiking up to around 1000. I can play my PS3 games (such as Call of Duty, or Battlefield) flawlessly, but I cannot play the same titles on my PC whatsoever. I use an Ethernet cord whilst connected on my PC, and I know for sure the drivers are up to date. My PC is fairly outdated so I get bad FPS in most of my games, but that doesn't affect your ping. I was planning on building a gaming PC so as to play games with high settings at high FPS. But at the moment I'm just going to buy a PS4 because I get so much better connection on a console. I want to be a PC gamer but I'm unable to because of the latency.

I know the bad latency is because I'm on satellite internet. But again, I have little to no latency on console games but I have an unbearable amount on PC.

I'm sure there's no way to fix this, but if anyone could tell my why it's like this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot! :)

A few things that might help you. First, clean the computer with CCleaner, registry too. Make sure no other programs (including browser windows) are running while you are gaming. You can also disable any unnecessary programs at startup. Disable your antivirus temporarily and see if that makes an improvement. Defrag your HDD if its not on a regular schedule. Then there are a number of tweaks you can make if you are comfortable with doing them. See the Broadband tweaks section at Speedguide.net. Of particular interest are checking and changing your MTU, and disabling Nagle's Algorithm. Latency is the time it takes to communicate between your computer and the server, which is really not under your control and varies considerably depending on the location of the server. You might try different servers and find one with a lower ping for you.

The problem is you can not use numbers from games so called "ping" times for much other than a representation of how well the game is running. These have so many other things involved and if you try to compare say different games or different hardware platforms, like you are, you can't really be sure you are testing the same thing.

The best way to test is with a actual ping command. I am not sure if you can do that on a ps3. You would want to ping something like 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.2 which are large distributed dns servers. You would expect to see the same number.

You could I suppose try something like www.pingtest.net. Unfortunately this can be affected to some extent by the web browser.

What you should see is there no difference in the network....because it is the same network.

Now why you see difference in games is because games are measuring much more than network delay. I have seen people reduce their ingame ping times by changing video settings. That from a network concept makes no sense at all since the video traffic is not going over the network.

You may be best off going to the forums for each game you like and see the discussion/arguments about pc vs console. You will quickly find out if there is a generic issue running some game on pc. The last example was the batman game that ran so poorly on pc it was removed from the online stores but ran fine on consoles.
