So as the title says black friday is coming up and I'm looking at upgrades.

AMD FX-8370/8350 vs Intel i5-6400 skylake vs Intel i5-4460 vs intel i5-4590s. They will be used for gaming and browsing mostly. Not alot of editing and stuff.

Obv, MB will depend on CPU. Is it time to get a DDR4 motherboard? or is DDR3 still viable?

GPU will come later on, but probably a GTX970. Any advantages choosing Intel over AMD here? Also, will any of the CPUs bottleneck this GPU?

Hello,

I've put together a really good $850-900 PC build for you. I know you said you are looking to upgrade, not build a new PC, but I thought I might as well link you a build, so if you just want to upgrade, you can pick individual components that from this build that you might want to use.

Here:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)...

Advantage of intel over AMD is that if you want to upgrade in the future there will only be a minimal upgrade available for AMD as there next gen of processors are going to use a different socket and the difference between 8370 and the top processors for AM3+ socket is negligible and wouldn't be worth the money to upgrade.

DDR 3 is certainly still viable.

^^ the above build is really good but, I would also opt for the newest chipset available so I would say defiantly go with the Skylake processor with either a Z170 if you plan to get a K CPU in the future or a H170 motherboard if you never want a K series chip to OC, this will give you a much better potential upgrade path, Haswel CPU's are still very good price/performance but their chipset is now outdated and offers no potential upgrades for the future you can still use DDR3 RAM for a lot of H170 motherboard but DDR4 is recommended and you're upgrading anyway so why not :D

Thanks for the answers! Asked for a friend of mine who was doing some upgrades. He ended up buying a new case and GPU for a faster performance upgrade. Thanks for the effort Mxhawthy! Looked like a really solid build.
