The PC I am dreaming about would have 32GB of memory (I open many large applications simultaneously). Can I get away with 16GB, if I have an SSD drive? I am thinking memory with be cashed to SSD drive, which is fast.

Why do you think you need 32GB RAM? What are you running that might need that much?
SSD or HDD, 16GB is just fine.

What apps? There definitly a place for 32/64 and even higher DRAM setups. Many do video and imaging at the same time, have multiple videos open, etc. If you place your page file on the SSD it will help the speed up much better than the older platter drives (and if when you move to 32GB you can use some as a RAMDrive for even faster access to data files, etc
