when i switch from 60hz to 144hz i get a black screen ...any ideas?

bought a msi gtx 780 and put it into my pc. I have hooked it up to a iiyama prolite 144hz monitor using a dvi cable. Pc works on 60hz but once i switch to 120/144hz it black screens and defaults back to 60hz. can anyone help? thanks
