My current build is:

  • >Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
    >CPU: i5-2500K @ 4.8GHz (Water Cooled)
    >GPU: GTX 580 (Reference Cooler)
    >Monitor: BenQ 1080p 60Hz
    >RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance
    >PSU: Corsair TX850 ? 80 PLUS (850Watts)
The above was a pre-built PC I got back in early 2012 for £1000 and I have since replaced the original HDD with an SSD and new HDD. The graphics card will be the first 'big' upgrade though.

I've been looking around and have decided to get a 1440p monitor to replace my current 1080p one, however I'm not sure what graphics card to get.
My GPU budget is £280 but I have a friend offering me another £100 for my 580 (so £380 total). I was planning on getting a 970, but I'm not sure if it's enough for 1440p (especially concerning the 3.5GB issue).
Black friday is about to happen so if a 980 goes into my price range should I get it?

Will a 970 last as long for 1440p as my 580 has for 1080p or should I look at a 980? (580 came out in 2010)

What brands should I look for?

Is my processor too outdated to keep up with a 970 or 980? (I'm not sure if throttling will be an issue...)

Any help would be very much appreciated.
