Hey,

I cant choose between the following components:

CPU:

AMD FX-6300, AMD-FX 8320E, Intel i5-4460.

GPU:

GTX960, R9 380, R9 380X

Right now I am having the Intel i5-4460 paired with the R9 380 on my mind. I know the R9 380X is faster but its also more expensive. I could substitute that for a cheaper AMD CPU. My goal is to play the newest games and get as much gaming performance as possible out of the hardware. The games to be played are: GTA 5, Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Assassins Creed and such. Please guide me.

Solution
The i5 + 380X would be your best bet, but would be difficult (if not impossible) on a $600 budget.

Is that budget for the whole rig? Or just the CPU + GPU?

Do you have any components already?

Ok then, the intel cpu wins hands down, it is much faster than the AMD counterparts, even when they are overclocked. As far as gpu goes, I view the 380x as a resounding failure. Just look for a lightning deal tomorrow on an r9 390 or gtx 970, you will find them for 250$ or less, there have already been 2 deals like that, but I sadly don't have the cash on me to upgrade myself :(
Anyway, an overclocked r9 380 will equal a stock 380x, whereas the next tier of card (970 and 390) are MUCH BETTER and are going for the same price right now.
The main difference between gtx 960 and r9 380 is power consumption, amd uses a lot more juice than NVIDIA, so yeah, but the rest of all that hullabaloo people are always on about depends more on how the game is optimized for the manufacturer (did they make it with amd in mind or nvidia) than actual graphics power.
Anyway, hope this helps and good luck

One more question: How much power does my power supply need? I have an old 12V rail with lots of amps 500W power supply. Just wondering if i should upgrade or keep it...

I ordered the following components since I decided to save a bit more money after seeing a couple benchmarks with AMD cpus.

AMD 8320E
R9 380

According to my research the CPU should be taking around 160W under load, the GPU 200W under load. Then there is still the mainboard, hdd and 8GB of ram.
It just seems like 500W are not enough.

Rule of thumb:
you ALWAYS need 20% more watts than what your pc uses, for safety.
You can use pcpart picker to add up the total wattage you need, it is very accurate.

It is never a good idea to reuse really old psus, because they are the life blood of your systrem, if it goes, everything goes. If you are SURE it still works and are ok with the risks, then in theory, yes. I think you need at least 550-600W for this pc anyway though. Look at the "PSU tier list" here on Tom's, just google it and look for the result from toms hardware. It has them all ranked, just get a tier 2 with 600W-ish. (so, about 550 to 650 would be your best bet).

also:
WHY ON EARTH did you get an AMD eight core slow -E CPU!!!!! (the -E is the worst part). If this is for gaming, then you would have been much better off going for an i3. It would have used less power, been cooler, been a bizillion times faster. What benchmarks did you look at?!
Do you need 8 cores? (If you do, I take it all back, this cpu is ok for your needs).
NO GAME USES 8 CORES, you will notice NO improvement in any games, with the possible exception of a few games, that can take advantage of 6, but not 8.
The performance of the cpu you bought is not great, it will serve you well for multitasking and the like, but for gaming, it would have been much better to either get the i5 4460, or even the i3 4170.
I do not wish to make you feel bad, I jus don't understand why you would buy that cpu. Don't worry, it will still play all your games, but it will be a bottleneck in a lot of them. Anyway good luck, and I hope this helped.

I hear you, I was facing the same problem yesterday, except I went for the i3, because I plan to raise the base clock on it and didn't really need 4 cores, 4 threads is enough for my needs, but you need a 4 core cpu. How much did it set you back? Are you going to overclock it (I hope not, it's -E for a reason)? Anyway, I get it. I would personally gone for the fx6300, but that is because I want to overclock as well. Anyway, you did the right thing, thanks for explaining it. You will be fine in games, don't worry.
Anyway, good luck and I hope this helped.

P.S. please change the solution of this thread, because if you didn't go for what he suggested, then that means it isn't the solution.

idk how to change the solution. i didnt go for anything yet im about to order today and games do use 4 cores today. Yes you are right I havent seen a game use 8 cores thats why I might for for the 6350 with 6 cores and a much higher base block rate. PC Part picker says my build will need 414W in total.

Yeah, you need at least 550W.
If you really want to play 4 core games, and don't need 8 cores, then I reckon the fx6350 wins. It is the same chip as the fx6300, just has a faster clock speed. Just add up the mobo price (it has to be able to output 125W to the cpu, not all low end boards can) with the CPU, and do the same for the 8320E. I think the price will be about the same, but the fx 6350 will be faster, it has a faster clock speed and better perfomance. Anyway, this is your best bet for a budget buikld to play 4 core games. Good luck and I hope this helped.
