Hey guys, I'm new to the whole building a gaming PC thing, but I have done research into it, however I'd like to get some advice on this.

PS: I'm from South Africa and the price of electronics here are really high. Also I've converted the prices of the stuff that i found to USD.

My current specs are:

GPU: MSI GTX 960 2gb Armored Krait edition
Cpu: Intel core2quad Q6600
Motherboard: Its an old HP xw 4600 Workstation motherboard
PSU: Also from the workstation its 475w 80 Plus bronze
Ram: 6gb 800mhz

The cpu is quite outdated and the ram is also slow, both are bottlenecking my gpu quite intensely and need to be upgraded along with my motherboard of course.
Now I've found an intel core i7 2600K for $120 that i would like to get. The other newer Cpu's that I also like are the AMD FX 9370 $265 and i5 6600K which is $275 and the core i7 4970k for $370.

I am on budget but it can accommodate one of the newer cpu's like the FX 9370 or core i5 6600k but I would like to avoid spending the extra cash on a newer cpu especially if its going to make little difference.
So my question is should I get the Core i7 2600k or is it worth me spending the extra cash to get one of the newer ones?

If it saves you money then yeah you will be good with i7-2600K. Btw, the FX is a waste of money, don't buy it.

Between the old i7 and new i5, if the difference in price is that big then get the cheaper i7 - it's still a solid CPU :)
Your motherboard is not the right socket for the i7 and any of the other CPUs for that matter. Honestly, for that motherboard socket, there's little upgrade from the Q6600 that you already have so you either stick with what you have or get new CPU+mobo.

Sorry, but that's the truth.

Sorry if I didn't clearly state it in my original question but I know that i have to upgrade my motherboard.

I know that I need a socket 1155 mobo for the second gen i7 2600k and that I'd need an AM3+ for the FX 9370 or an 1151 for the skylake 6600K.

So that aside, from the those cpu's that i listed. Is it worth upgrading to a newer one or will I be fine with the i7 2600K
