I currently own an i3 with H77 mobo, couple of years old but still working good. Right now I'm trying to get a new video card cause my radeon is f***ing up. I was planning to go for a MSI GTX 970 and not need to upgrade that for awhile. But my friend said my comp might not work well or something on that line with the 970 and said I should get a 960 instead. Should I just go for the 970? Will it work perfectly fine with my H77 mobo?

Solution
Either the GTX 970 or GTX 960 will work fine on that system. The only possible drawback is if you have a proprietary motherboard that refuses to work with newer UEFI BIOS cards. But that is very, very unlikely considering the recent age of your board.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm gonna stick to my choice and get the 970 since its black friday and with the 970 I wouldn't have to upgrade to a new card like next year for newer games.

And if/when you upgrade the CPU, it will still be relevant. Right now, it may be a bit much for the i3 to keep up with in some games, but not a deal breaker.
