Is it enough to just upgrade the GPU or...?

Hi folks.

So I am wondering: Would it be sufficient for me to upgrade ONLY the GPU of my system, to achieve very high settings in a game such as Fallout 4 (or whatever the GTX970 can do)? Thinking of buying the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

Or do I need to upgrade cpu, ram etc. as well?

Specs:
i5 2500K 4.0 Ghz
8 gb ram, 1600 hz
750W psu
Gigabyte Z68XP-3DP
2x MSI GTX 650 TI 2gb SLI

I am so confused about how the CPU/RAM affects my frames in-game :s Maybe someone can explain it to me?

Okay, it seems this is not going to happen... :(

According to http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3978#sp it appears I cannot

It says:
"(All PCI Express x16 slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
* To support PCI Express 3.0, you must install an Intel 22nm CPU. "

Since the i5 2500k is a 32nm CPU (sandy bridge) I needed an Ivy Bridge which is 22nm to support the PCI Express 3.0, which is required for the GPU.
