Easiest way to migrate (clone) OS from old SSD to new SSD

Hi TH,

I just picked up a Samsung 850 evo 250Gb on sale without thinking too much about the migration process from my current Crucial M4 128Gb. I checked around on the forums but couldn't find clear, definitive information on what best to do in this situation where I'm migrating between SSDs. I've heard over and over that the migration software included with the samsung drive is garbage, and I don't have a sata to usb external adapter (though I could get one if needed). Advice on a simple way to clone the drive or otherwise seamlessly migrate would be greatly appreciated. I have a surplus of SATA ports on my MB, so I could feasibly have both drives connected internally for a transfer. I'm running W7 home premium.

Thanks!

Solution
No, the Samsung Data Migration software is NOT garbage. I've used it.
Specifically, used it on my current boot drive, going from a Kingston 120GB to a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.

Install the Samsung Data Migration software.
Power off
Disconnect all drives except your current Crucial
Connect the new Samsung
Power up
Run it, and do the clone thing.

Or, any of the other current clone/migration tools
Easus Todo, Casper, Acronis Trueimage, Macrium Reflect.

what USAFRet said X2

i had some nightmare experiences with samsung's migration software years back - but had to use it recently to clone to a samsung 950 PRO - could not have been more impressed, actually cloned the drive, an AHCI PCIe SSD to the 950 PRO NVMe in under 10 minutes, and the new drive booted fine the first time. I've used it now about 5X (helped a bud with his machine, and same result

it will only support samsung drives however - ie, the source drive can be any mfgr, but the target drive has to be samsung and a retail unit, not OEM drive

Hi, thanks for your response. I'll try this for sure. When you say connect the new drive, do you mean internally via sata? or externally via a special usb adapter.
