Hey Guys,
Just doing a basement reno so will be expanding my home network. I currently use my ASUS RT-N66u for my wireless needs and as a switcher for a few wired devices (PS4, Magic jack, PC). And a Cisco cable modem which is in bridge mode so my ASUS handles everything.
To facilitate the bigger network I am planning on buying a 16 port gigabit switch, of undetermined make and model. I am just not sure exactly the best way to hook it up to maximize performance.
My initial thought was to use the ASUS for just wireless and run a single ethernet to the switch and have the switch handle all wired devices. This will make running wires easiest as well as maximize flexibility to router placement.
My concerns are as follows.
1. If all of my wires devices are hooked up to essentially one port on the ASUS will I suffer a speed loss on transfers?
2. It will still be the asus the is assigning IP addresses so the wireless devices should have no issue seeing all devices that are wired to the switch. Is this a true statment?
Thank you in advance. I am also open to switch suggestions. Only requirement is that it be gigabit and able to mount on a wall with the gigabit port facing up.
