Confused about Uninterruptible Power Supply

Hello all,
I came to because I'm a bit confused as to the purpose of a UPS. I just built a budget gaming rig that should, at most, use 450W. I also have a UPS rated at 550VA. My house has occasional power outages when too many appliances are turned on (microwave, tv, A/C, etc.), which is why I wanted to get one. The only reason I would want one is to prevent any hardware damage (i.e. I won't be doing any very important work that would need saving). I know the 550VA is a bit low for my needs, but would this be better than nothing? In other words, would I be able to shut down my computer within a minute with this voltage? The only time my computer would be on is when I'm using it, so I'm not concerned about auto-shutdown software.

The 550VA is a measure of how much current the UPS can supply and not a measure of how long it can supply that current. If your computer draws more than what the UPS can handle, the UPS will probably shut off immediately.
I don't know what's in your computer, but I would guess that most of the time it will be using significantly less power than your estimated max. I think you should be ok, but I would test things just to be sure.
If you want to know how long the battery will last, you need to look at the amp hours.
