External HDDs no longer being recognized in Windows 10 after frozen system image backup

Hi - First post. I searched various threads and all seem different from my challenge. Apologies if it's already been discussed here.

1. I am running Windows 10 1511 build
2. I am a decent end user but not savvy with code/programming etc
3. Two different HDDs of different brands which both were working in same laptop moments prior

I was doing a system image of Windows 10 laptop to my external HDD where I store my images for different computers when things flickered several times on screen. After letting it run another 20 minutes, it never moved and seemed to freeze. I used Task Manager to shut down the operation and reboot the system. After reboot, that hard drive no longer gets recognized by the operating system and File Explorer. Worse, I put in a totally different external hard drive that this OS recognized an hour prior, and it also is no longer being recognized by the operating system and File Explorer.

Worse worse, I took both external HDDs and put them in my wife's computer (also Win 10, not sure of build). They are not recognized there either.

Both were working in this laptop before the hung system image using the one HDD, now neither are showing up on two different hard computers. They both light up so the power seems fine - it's just the computers no longer recognize them in end user menu options, nor does Win 10 make any audio noise when they're plugged into the USB ports (all USB3.0 I think)

What did I dork up, and how do I fix it? Numerous searches here and on other forums sent me down countless rabbit holes that ended up being different challenges. I'm smart enough to take simple guidance from the forum, but I'm dumb enough to not be able to fix this on my own anymore.

Thanks in advance!
Bern

sounds like a fault in the usb on your lappy , so bad it wrecks the MBR on drives

Welcome to the TH community, Bern!

I'd recommend you to go to Disk Management and check if the external HDDs are properly recognized there. If they are, you can try assigning a different drive letter to the drives by right-clicking on them.
After the upgrade it's highly possible that the drivers got a bit messed up, so I'd also suggest you to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and download & reinstall the USB 3.0 Hub Controller drivers from there. If the HDDs freeze when connected to a particular computer, I'd suggest you to change the USB cable.
It might also be a good idea to check up on their health and SMART data status using their brand-specific diagnostic tools from their manufacturers or you can refer to this thread for some third-party suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Give it a try and let us know how it goes! :)
