Hello!

Because of Black Friday/ Cyber Monday, I have decided to upgrade my card. However, I'm stuck since I can't decide between the Asus Strix or the Gigabyte G1 Gaming for GTX 970. I hear great things about the Gigabyte card, but I'm not sure if it's worth paying the extra $40 and I'm not sure it'll fit my case (I have a NZXT 410 phantom case). The Asus, to me, has an awesome price, but I hear some people say it has poor cooling. Overall, I would like to have a card that would last a long time (5+ years)and I don't plan overclocking since I hear it can shorten the life of the card, but I'm wondering if the Gigabyte is worth paying the extra money since I think the Asus has poorer cooling than it.

Thank you so much for your help and happy thanks giving if you're in that sort of thing! :)

You were referring to 100% always recommendations. I simply directed you to where that statement would accurately apply.

I've pointed out the problem with 970 already.
In addition to the 8GB VRAM, the Radeons age better than the GeForces. If you look at a point in time a couple years ago, you see the gtx 780 being better than the R9 290, and the gtx 780 TI being better than the R9 290X. Now those roles have reversed and the radeons are better performing

Why is that?

Oh, wow! Thank you! :D

Well, that clears up on how great the Gigabyte is, but honestly, it all comes down to how much I really need.

As said before, I don't plan on overclocking or anything hardcore, I just want to know if the ASUS will be good enough for what I'm looking for: A card that runs fine as is and can last at least 5 years without dying on me.

Do you think it's worth paying an extra $40 dollars for the Gigabyte? From that post, it seems the ASUS is a fine choice too , it just isn't as good as the Gigabyte. What drew me to Gigabyte wasn't it's performance, but it's cooling which mades me think it would have a longer lifespan.

I don't need the fastest/greatest card. I prefer Decent Speed+Durability>Top speed+ short life span anyday.

I just want to know which card fits that Decent speed+Durability-balance.

(Though Top speed+ Top durability is even better ;) )

If the Gigabyte can do that, I'm down for buying and forking over the other $40 if the durability on the card trumps the ASUS significantly.

Because the 970 has 3.5GB of effective VRAM. It's a small issue now, but a few years from now that's going to really suck. Second, the main selling point of the 970 is its overclock-ability.

You should be looking at an R9 390 if you want to buy a card to keep for several years.

I prefer Nvidia, but I may look into that card. Thanks!

I guess my real question then is if the the cooling on the Gigabyte is that much better than the ASUS and is it worth forking over the extra $40.

Also, more on the 390 vs 970. Could you please provide your pros and cons for both. From what I hear both are great, although the 390 gets a bit hotter because of older architecture and what brand would you prefer? I never dealt with AMD so I'm not sure what to expect.

jerdle will always recommend an AMD card no matter what!

Someone who is a respected long time member of the forum and also a Mod? I personally trust his recommendations and would take them over yours any day of the week, month or year!

I like the Nitro from sapphire, take a look at this article and the conclusion:

I was looking at that card! That's great it has positive reviews!

One thing that concerns me is the size...

I have a NZXT 410 Phantom case and though it is spacious, idk if it will have enough room for the Sapphire. Other than the Sapphire, what other card would you recommend and thank you for your replies and patience.

Yup! Just looked up how to do it and it came out easily. It's decided, I'm getting the Sapphire card Monday :bounce:

Thanks everyone!

(Also, since I'm getting the card from Newegg, they have an 3 year ADH warranty and after reading their policy I'm still a lil' bit confused. Is it just 3 years warranty total or is it 2 years of Sapphire's warrnty and once that ends the Newegg ADH takes effect making it technically 5 years warranty? That'd be awesome, though I may be a bit too optimistic. If anyone knows, that'd be awesome!)
