I have generic ADATA 2x4 1600 11-11-11-28. I'm planning to replace it with 1 8gb, most likely a HyperX Fury. My mobo only has 2 ram slots and I might another add 8gb in the future. My question is, what would happen if i use the 8gb stick in one slot and my old 4gb in the on the slot? Can that even work? If so, what do I get? Or is it just better to just use the 8gb and leave the other slot empty?

There's no guarantee that mixing RAM will work. If the modules are exactly the same frequency and CAS timings they have a higher chance of working together, but there's no guarantee. Even exactly the same RAM modules from different packs don't always work together. Your mileage may vary.

IF mixing them did work, you would have access to 12 GB of RAM over the 8, but honesly you probably wouldn't see a tangible performance benefit in most applications.

I would personally just stick with the 8GB module, or if possible two 4GB modules from the same pack so you could make use of dual architecture if your motherboard supports it (10-15% performance increase).

If you run a single 8GB memory module, your computer will be a lot slower than with 2 slow memory sticks.

If 8 Gb is enough, don't bother changing it - you would probably struggle to see the performance difference.

If you need more, buy 2x8GB matched pair, and sell your old memory on ebay.
