Hey all,

The 1TB external HDD at my work is showing almost full on "My Computer", although the files on it actually only sum up to 200GB.

My thought is that the drive is with some issue, something like those USB pens that are advertised as having 10GB, but in reality only have 1.

Any help on this would be appreciated, as it is work related and urgent! :) many thanks

Hey there, blasc.

Would you please post a screenshot of what you see about the drive and its partitions in Disk Management (you can use imgur.com to upload the image)? Here's how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows to manage hard drives. If the drive is 1TB it should have around 931GB available storage space. If you see "Unallocated" space there, all you need to do is extend the existing partition or create a new one by formatting this storage space: How to partition and format a WD drive on Windows and Mac OSX.
On the other hand it would be wise to backup any important data which you might have on that drive and download DLG (Data Lifeguar Diagnostics) to run both tests (Quick and Extended) and see if...

Here's how to do it How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

all taken care of.

Problem was that one of the folders had MILLIONS (literally) of small files. So basically the space shown was indeed correct.

Did backup on folders that were important and format all the way.

Thanks anyway Boogieman. Best solution selected for the help ^^

I am having the very problem and it is confounding me. We are running Win 7 on a 512GB SSD. There are just under 200GB of files but C-drive is nearly full. Disk cleanup has been run but only deleted about 6GB of temp internet files. Here is an upload of the disk:

Hi Nader.

Having in mind this is the OS drive things might be a bit different. Check out this article for helpful tips on how to cleanup more space: http://www.howtogeek.com/125923/7-ways-to-free-up-hard-disk-space-on-windows/. It has a suggestion on how to analyze the space to see what kind of files might be taking a lot of the drive's capacity. Make sure to disable Hibernation and to reduce the space used for System Restore point, as well as delete some of them if you have a lot. Also you should check out this article with tips for SSD users: https://www.maketecheasier.com/12-things-you-must-do-when-running-a-solid-state-drive-in-windows-7/. You should definitely enable TRIM if it's not enabled now.

Note that there are instructions in those articles on how to do everything I've mentioned.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
