Hello,

I have a Solid State Drive (only for OS and Programs) and a Mechanical Drive (for storage). Is it still recommended to have an external backup storage device.

I was wondering if the computer crashes, can I not plug my mechanical drive to another machine and have access to my stuff.

Thanks in advance.

It's an "unenlightened" idea NOT to have a backup really, even an SSD can fail or be corrupted or infected even, and with a mechanical drive it will be when, not if, it dies. As for if you buy and use an external drive or internal doesn't matter as much, external would be safer as if something more drastic occurred inside your PC it should have far less chance of effecting a drive that is outside the PC case. And if in the very unlikely event you ever have a house fire and have time to get it an external drive is a lot easier to take than a whole PC. :)

As for putting a drive in a different PC to retrieve the files, that's great, but not if the drive is dead, what do you do then without a backup?

I would also like to say that when my hard drive crashed, I got a new one loaded with Win 7 as before. I plugged in my extrnal drive and was able to see and use those files as before. So far I have not had external drives fail, and I sure hope that never happens. Perhaps, I should also consider an additional storage device. Or maybe it's time I start printing those things I am saving that are important to me. :)
