So I am currently looking into upgrading my good old q6600, been pushing for years but I am starting to see aging.

Original System:
Inspiron 530
8gb ddr2
core 2 quad q6600 (3.0ghz)
gtx 650 ti

I gave the pc to my brother who is starting to get into graphics rendering (after effects, eg.) so i thought it would be a good starter and i want to build a smaller faster gaming rig...on a budget.

I was able to pickup an r7 240 for free so i thought id try to start off with that for now since it is able to keep up with 720p for the most part.

Now i have put together an AMD A8 build because i have been interested in dual graphics since i seen two 6800 in action. I have read many people on the forums say this is a waste of money, but as i stated i have an r7 240 and unless it is overclocked its sorta useless so i want to try to put some use to it for now till i can upgrade and i thought this would fall into gaming, budget, small.

I also put together another small build using the same case but instead swapped the mobo and cpu for a lga1150 combo. Intel is better. period. and i know the socket will be able to provide me with more pleasure down the road. BUT, i do not mind 1080p 60fps gaming on low, med, high, or ultra.

So the main difference between the two, other than price, is the AMD build features 8gb of 2133mhz ram (due to the integrated r7) and the intel build features 4gb of 1600mhz

SO which would you say is the better build? My goal is to be able to spend the least money for the best performance of what i currently have (r7 240). I plan to upgrade to a more powerful gpu in the future. The real question, i need to know will the A8 satisfy my 1080p 60fps gaming needs using dual graphics for now maybe upgrading to an A10 + R7 250 in the future or just getting the lga 1150 and upgrading that? (which i already know is a money pit, an i5 2nd gen is still expensive)

I see nothing wrong with either build. The Intel, besides being cheaper, will use a little less power. That's not enough for me to choose it over the A8, though. Since you don't need a lot of processor for the graphics level your at and it is an HTPC, that would be my choice. For serious gaming, you would want something quite a bit more powerful than these two, even after upgrades. I would use it as is For playback and light gaming until it becomes obsolete.

The AMD dual graphics set up is a huge problem with little reward for most people .
If you are not gaming its of little merit . The 2400 or the apu could handle all the graphics demands .

If you want the AMD build then use an athlon 860K and underclock it + the R5 240

If you use the intel haswell use the graphics card too . The intel graphics drivers are so dumb you will feel like smashing the computer with a hammer withing an hour or two

With either build you will have far less trouble with 1600 MHz , 1.5 volt RAM

My main goal with this is to game at a minimum of 720p maxed settings not dropping under 30 frames (doesnt seem too hard)
According to pcpartpicker making those changes (860k and 1600 mhz ram) only saved me 12 bucks and the performance is actually slower by about 15 frames. Thanks for the answer, but since i have an r7 240 already it would make more sense to get the a8 and go dual gpu than to buy a processor that is basically the same without integrated graphics and run the r7 240 standalone. and the 2133 ram gives a benefit to the dual graphics as well as standard multitasking.

It really depends on your game preference too. Personally I tend to like games that need a faster CPU. If you like more graphic intensive games the dual video might work for you.

So I have scrapped the idea on both those rigs. I was able to get a mini itx h87 motherboard, 8 gigs ddr3, and i5-2400 for a very very good price, basically free. So I have purchased an r9 270 from newegg (89.99) and im gonna pair everything up inside a cougar qbx case so i can have room to upgrade since i wasnt expecting to get the proccessor and motherboard when i did. Thanks for the help guys.
