Upgrade from HD 6870 to GTX 970, or wait until the next GTX series?

Hello,

Title pretty much says it all, my HD 6870 is starting to fall behind for me at 1080p. I'm looking at low to medium settings for pretty much any new titles, (The Witcher 3, Fallout 4) and I'm interested in a GTX 970. All the benchmarks look fine, and I'm okay with running high instead of ultra if need be for some titles.

I'm planning on a new build from the ground up in 2016, and I'm wondering if I should get a GTX 970 now, so I can play new titles, or wait until my new build to see if the new cards are out yet.

Any opinions?

Core i5 2500k
XFX HD6870 Black Edition with Gelid Icy Vision cooler
8GB Corsair Vengeance
60gb SSD for Windows 7
7200RPM 1TB for data
Corsair HX1000 1000W power supply.

Thanks!

The 970 is good enough to max any game (at least every game I've played) at 1080p, so it's a very substantial upgrade from the 6870. Whether or not you need that kind of power is up to your decision. With that huge PSU, you could also get the newest Radeon card, if you wanted to stick with the same kinda setup.

I'm one of those guys that isn't red or green team loyal, I just get what makes the most sense. I do want the power of the 970, I'm just concerned that buying it now may not be a great idea if something better is right around the corner. 2016 is going to be a year for me to buy all my new toys (New PC, off road Jeep build, and new guitar) before I buckle down and start saving for school. If the 970 will last as long as my 6870 has, then I don't mind pulling the trigger. I have however in the past bought a GPU, only to have something substantially better come out within the next few months.

It will not be outdated any time soon. If you decide to get a higher res monitor, then it may become antiquated sooner.

Cool. I might pull the trigger then. I'm very likely to stick with 1080p, with 1440p being as high as I see myself going. Thanks Dan!
