FX series Memory Support dual channel 1866MHZ

I have looked at a couple threads and have not gotten a strait answer so i figured I would ask.

I currently have a FX-8320(4.3ghz OC) with an AMD 970 gaming mb

I have read that the MC on the fx series of GPUS is pretty weak. My NB is at 2200 mhz (I can't change it because bios is screwed up and I dont want to go through the trouble of fixing it.)

Would the CPU be able to handle 2x8 gb sticks of 1866mhz ram at cl10? Would it run it in dual channel mode??

Yes the fx CPU can natively support two memory modules in dual channel at 1866 or 4 at 1600. Also yes the memory controller can be weak but this can be over come.

Cool thanks for the straightforward answer that is just what I was looking for. Also just curious how did you get your fx-8320 to 4.6ghz (is it stable). Mine literally will not go past 4.3 no matter the voltage. Maybe my Motherboard is holding me back. Did you use a multiplier OC or a FSB OC? I only used multiplier and voltage.

Actually, the FX CPUs are native to a 1333 MC (memory controller) per their own BIOS and Kernel Programming guide, you won't find AMD saying the MC is native to 1866 - when BullDozer and the 8150 was released (with the pre-OC they had on it) it could generally runb a pair of 4 or 8GB 1866 sticks and many were going WOW! it's native 1866, after many of us went head to head with AMD they ammended their 'Memory guide to state to the affect that the FX CPU can handle UP TO 1866 at 1 stick per channel

Most 8320s can carry 2x8GB at 1866 (the looser CL10 will help and if any problems give me a shout and we can try a couple voltage adjustments ;)

What does 1 stick per channel mean? to me this implies that it runs in single channel with 2x8gb 1866.

Well my CPU runs stable at 4.5 with multiplier 20 x 225 but right now I'm using everything auto with default voltage so in my sig that's just the turbo speeds since my bus is at 233. I get better performance use less power and generate less heat.

Last time I checked AMD stated 1866 with two sticks and that's always worked fine for me and still does today. My memory multiplier is 933 = 1866 but my board also allows me to us 10.66 =2133 but I needed to add voltage to the CPU north bridge.

Their memory guide I linked to is a probable, it doesn't state 1866 as definitive - (they used to have a disclaimer like I mentioned "UP TO 1866", and if this was indeed 'Native' it should be able to run all 4 slots at 1866 or better. I'm not saying it can't, obviously not, I run 4x8GB of 2400 with my 8370 (same thing as the 8320 or 8350 with a higher multiplier enabled at 'stock'. but htere is no guarantee

Tradesman feels my reply wasn't the best answer so if you agree please select his/her or none at all. I'm just providing my experience with this and at one time AMD did say 1866 in dual channel but apparently they've updated it. Toms even perfomed benchmarks on AMD CPU's and memory speeds. Anyway until I experience otherwise I'll keep running my memory @1866 or higher.

I'm just pointing out that 1866 is a possible, not a given. We've seen plenty of people here with FX 4xxx and 6xxx CPUs that couldn't run 1866, and even some 8xxx. It would be nice if AMD was more up front with factual information - they've been doing this for years. They advertised the Phenon II CPUs for awhile as capable of 1600, yet the 965 C3 was the first that could reliably run 1600

Your answer was already selected as best answer because I just needed to know if I should jump on buying the RAM. Tradesman1 was very helpful as well and I appreciated his in depth analysis. I appreciate the help from both of you and I now feel comfortable with my purchase.

AMD certainly has some problems that need to be resolved in their departments (CPU,GPU). I love their products because they are cheap workhorses but they consistently forget to be forward and have good support for their products. Drivers are generally bad and there are many details they leave out or lie about. AMD/Radeon is like buying bulk from CHINA and Intel/Nvidia is like buying expensive made in USA.
