First time installing RAM - a couple of questions

Hi, this will be my first time upgrading RAM on my laptop - which is an ASUS K53SV. I've read through a number of posts and sites but just need a bit of clarification before purchasing to avoid any mistakes.

I understand mixing brands is not a good idea; plus it might be hard to match the specs of my current installed RAM. Currently is an ELPIDA 4GB ddr3 PC3-10600 in one slot. I want to upgrade to the maximum of 8GB. I'm presuming I should get two new 4GB sticks to replace the current one altogether. The first thing I'd like assistance with is the brand recommendation... the main brands popping up are Kingston and Crucial. Is it so important which brand it is?

Another question - more importantly! - can I simply upgrade the RAM frequency or must I stay with what it currently is? Currently is 1333MHz I believe (PC3-10600). Can I upgrade to, say 12800 given that I am using my laptop mostly for gaming?? Very helpful to understand if this is possible.

One final thing, it seems hard to find stores selling the specific ram I need, I suppose buying online is fine to do so? I don't normally shop online is all.

Okay, I think that's it. Thanks heaps for any answers :).

Laptop specs: Win7 64-bit
Intel Core i7-2670EM 2.20 GHz
HDD 950(ish) GB
2GB GeForce GT 540M
4GB RAM

Solution
Hello webman252,

From your latpop's main support site:

Supported Memory: DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 G SDRAM

1) G.Skill and Crucial are both very good RAM manufacturers and I've suggested two modules of theirs below
2) You'll need to stay at the 1333 frequency to ensure your laptop will support the memory
3) Buy from either Amazon or Newegg, both are reliable online retailers. I favor Newegg when possible, and both modules I've recommended below can be bought from Newegg.

Either of these should work perfectly in your laptop:

Memory: Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($47.99 @ Amazon)

Memory: G.Skill 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($40.99 @ Newegg)...

Ahh okay, the frequency was my main concern but I understand I should leave it as it is. Not a problem.

Thankyou very much for those links too. I don't think the sites I was looking at earlier had too many 1333MHz ones. One last thing, is it true that a stick with 4 memory chips may be a bit quicker than one with 8 memory chips? Might go with the Crucial one if this is the case. Thanks heaps!
