I'm fresh to ubuntu, i installed some softwares like photoshop and kodi. Now before installing kodi, i could hear things right(I have a HP laptop, built-in speakers)(btw i installed kodi by comands if this makes a difference). I restarted the laptop and when it opened, i could not hear any sound. I went on youtube, clicked a random video... no sound. But, when i plug my headphones, i can hear sound. Is this a software problem or hardware?

OK there are a few things to check one is go to the top right corner of your screen and check out your sound settings. Click on the little speaker icon you'll see a slider bar and under that "Sound settings" click on that and check the output tab and the applications tab. Make sure that nothing is disabled and that the volume control isn't turned down for an application. From your description I'm actually guessing something in the drivers got corrupted. I've had it happen on other operating systems. Also sometimes Chrome in particular can just stop playing sound for whatever reason. So check a different file first, like play an mp3 in Ubuntu. See if it's a youtube problem or an ubuntu problem. Additionally check out this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure it has tips for troubleshooting and the procedure for reinstalling drivers. Good Luck
