I'm building a computer and I've had some people telling me it is better to use 4 x 4GB sticks for 16 GB total and others who say use 4 x 8 GB sticks for 32 GB. Which one is better? Does it really make a difference and would I ever even need 32 GB or would 16 GB be enough?

Solution

For that use, 32GB is way overkill. 16GB is probably overkill.
Hi

What do you use your pc for?
Only few applications need more than 8 GB or 16 GB
Editing videos
Or multiple virtual pc,s running at once
Not for games

What ever amount of ram chosen go for a matching set
Debate is 4 x 4 GB or 2 x 8 GB to get to 16 GB.?

Thanks, and thank you everyone. At least I know won't have to spend extra for the 32 GB.

Thanks, I'm kind of on a tight budget with this build and it has been nerve wracking trying to plan with people telling me go this way or that with it making me change plans time and time again. Kind of sucks it is being built on this tight a budget as I already had to settle with a few parts I'm unsure of, but seem ok for my needs. Just getting annoying having to make changes cause somebody is preaching that I'm wrong and I should get this part for $20 which takes $20 off something else such as my case or skipping the HD and using an old one that I have. I already had to cancel the idea of using a SSD for now, but plan on getting one later.

The majority of questions ("I want to do X!") here lead to a follow on question of "Why?" or "What are you doing with this?"
The answers to that then may lead to a real answer. Or may lead to other questions.
