How to tell of your rig can run games at 1440p?

Solution
GTX 970, medium to high settings on most games at 1440p. No Ultra except on the very least demanding titles. If you want 60fps on very demanding games, you'll probably need to use medium settings. No way you're getting near your refresh rate with your FPS though, not at 1440p. Probably not even at 1080p depending on how demanding the game is. Less demanding games you'll be able to match up.

And yes, the 144hz refresh rate of your monitor IS a factor, if you don't want tearing.
Do you already have that setup, or is that what you're planning to get?

Yes, I have a 144 hz refresh rate, but it is only a 1080p monitor, so it can't run at those resolutions. I hope 1080p still looks good compared to 1440p. Thank you for your help!

1080p at 144hz should look better than 60hz, if you're able to maintain high enough frame rates. If you can't maintain something in the neighborhood of 144FPS you'll need to drop your quality settings on a game by game basis or you'll likely experience issues.
