New Xbox One Controller (with 3.5mm headphone jack) Won't Work with Windows 7

My old Xbox One controller has worked fine with my Windows 7 computer for almost the entire year, and it still works just fine. However... I decided to replace it with a new Xbox One controller (all of the new ones have 3.5mm headphone jacks, now; that's an easy way to distinguish them from the old ones).

I actually bought three of the controllers, and NONE OF THEM will work with my Windows 7 computer. When I connect them, it says that the device driver installation has failed. And when I try to manually update the driver for these controllers it says no drivers are found.

I already went to Microsoft's website, and I already followed all of their directions. They say to connect the controller, go to device manager, and automatically search for drivers. That doesn't work.

I spent THREE HOURS chatting with two Microsoft employees, and both ended up sending me to that support page, which doesn't work in my scenario.

Here's what I think: There is some issue with using the new controllers on Windows 7 computers. Someone else on here posted that their controller works fine on Windows 8.1, but not on WIndows 7.

It could be something as simple as me needing to uninstall a Windows update, or change a setting or something, but I don't know what the exact issue is.

Has anyone else encountered issues trying to get the new Xbox One controllers to work on their Windows 7 computer? If so, how have they gotten the new controllers to work?

Another theory is maybe I need to remove the driver I've been using all year with the old style controller, and maybe installing the new driver in its place will work. But I'm very leery to try that.

The driver that's been working fine for me all year is the one that you used to be able to manually download from Major Nelson's blog. Now his blog says everything will be done automatically from now on, and he has actually removed the links for manually installing the drivers.

Point being: I'm afraid if I uninstall the driver that's worked for me all year, I will be stuck with no way to use an Xbox One controller, if I can't get the new drivers to work.

Anyway... When I use the Xbox One controller with my Windows 7 computer, the computer treats the new controllers like some kind of alien devices. The device manager won't even refer to them by their proper names. (the device manager DOES refer to the old controller by its proper name, though)

Windows 7 may not recognize that the driver you installed goes with the hardware. See if you can manually select the driver for the hardware by right clicking on the device in question and then manually selecting the driver. Windows has a database of device numbers and drivers that match them and that data file may be an optional windows update rather than an automatically installed recommended update. I would install optional Windows Updates if you have some as it may fix the issue. Is your BIOS up to date? Are there any issues with USB controllers? Are the drivers for your USB controllers up to date?

****EDIT****
Okay I just got mine to work. No guarantee it's a cure for everyone, but after 3 hours of fiddling with settings and re-installing drivers I got mine to register. Basically I found this guy's video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RIDcLUpWaU

He walks you through manually installing the drivers. There's a link in the description for how to download the one you need in case you're unsure if Windows did it automatically when you connected the controller.

Ironically this was the first video that popped up when I went looking for help, but in the confusion of never having done this before when he tells you to manually select the driver from the list of all Microsoft ones I was accidentally selecting the 360 driver, not the Xbox One driver, which is listed as "Microsoft Xbox One" (so basically don't just hit X to take you to the Xbox drivers on the list like I did). The one you want is in the middle.

It was actually really simple, so I don't know if you tried this yet but if not hopefully it'll work for you too. I was really stressing out about it but just follow his walkthrough to the letter and it should come out alright provided you already have the Windows updates KB2685811 and KB2685813 which I keep being told are needed first.

Wow. Ok. :) So basically, I gave you the advice you needed but you failed to comprehend it or something. LOL

I said: You need all your Windows Updates, including those that are optional because one of them probably has the updated driver.

I also said "select your driver after doing this".

You're welcome.
