dear community.

I'm a last year student in electromechanical engineering and we have to write a 4 page paper about something to do with quality... I chose to write about the quality of PSU's. how companies use inferior products to lower their prices etc.

I'm going to talk about the technological aspect of power supplies (the choise of components used in power supplies) and I'm looking for some feedback on what i surely can not forget to mention in this paper.

I also hope that writing this paper will give me a better view on PSU's in general as i used to be one of those people who would chose a cheap low quality PSU to reduce the costs.
reading this article gave me inspiration to write this paper.

thanks in advance!

-seems like I selected a wrong forum topic-

kind regards,
Tsuneo

thanks in advance!

You could include how companies use their name recognition to con users into buying inferior products.
I suggest reading some of tomshardware's recent (last 1.5 years) articles on power supplies as they go into a good amount of detail.
You can talk about the current ATX power supply standard and how companies cut corners and offer power supplies that do not fully match the spec. You can find the specification with a google search or wikipeadia.

Yes, I'm also planning on writing about the efficency rating, how people think it's a measure of quality but in fact it is not.
as for now I'm explaining probably the main culprit in low quality units (the capacitators)

but good thinking about the name recognition!

I might just write the 4 page paper and then go in dept and perhaps translate it to english ;)

things you want to touch on?

-capacitors. why cheap caps fail.
-advertised load rating vs actual.
-power stability/fluctuations
-why you cannot go by brand X is great. why you need to go model by model.
-shielded vs unshielded cables and how they affect emi

etc

thanks, as for now I covered the tollerance opn the 3.3, 5 and 12v rails, the different kinds of safety measrues like OTP etc that the atx v2.4 specifications prescribe, i'm now covering the caps and what influence ambient temperaturee has on them.

i remember seeing an image somewhere on this forum from a cheap PSU versus a good quality PSU, but I cant seem to find it anymore. ofc I will find some on my good old friend google, but perhaps one opf you knows what immage i'm talking about and where i can find it. I think it was on this forum

-ahaa, I found it on the jonnyguru website linked from this forum ;)

Today I finished the paper (the version for school that is).

The subject however realy got my attention and i'm planning on researching more.

for now I'd like to thank you all for the input already!

I'll post some updates every now and then depending on the progression I made
