Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice around upgrades for a prebuilt PC that I bought on ebay quite a while ago now.

The spec is as below:

Intel i7-4790 3.60GHz LGA1150 'Haswell Refresh' CPU (Quad Core/8 Thread/22nm build process)
MSI GEForce GTX 770 OC 2GB GDDR5 PCie 3.0 Graphics Card
Intel 530 120GB High Perfomance SSD
8GB RAM (Kingston 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 (11-11-11 timing) DRAM)
MSI B85I Gen 4 LGA1150 Mini ITX motherboard
Antec ISK600 Mini ITX Shuttle Case
Antec Earthwatts EA-550 Platinum low noise PSU

If I install a few 'large' games I find myself running out of space pretty fast now. It seems like the SSD is slightly small and might be the problem.

My question is, what would I be best adding and upgrading now - a HDD or another SSD?
Could I install another SSD alongside the one that I have? If so, any suggestions on what would be some good options to buy?

Sorry if these sound like daft questions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You've basically got two main options - you can either add an additional device, or you can replace what's in there. If you add an additional device, you'll need to remember to make software install there (and/or move your document libraries over). If you replace your current SSD, you'll either have to migrate your existing Windows installation using a utility, or do a clean installation onto the new drive.

If you're looking to replace/upgrade your SSD, I'd recommend not going smaller than 250GB, preferably 500GB, as you've mentioned games. Ones to look at would be the Crucial MX200 and Samsung 850 EVO - both are very good. Alternatively, you could just fit an (additional) 1-2TB hard disk ...

In terms of choice, SSDs are more expensive, use less power, and have higher transfer rates and lower latencies. I would note that whilst loading games off an SSD will be faster, you shouldn't notice any other performance difference between it and a HDD (there is the possibility of less "lag" when streaming new content into the engine when playing open-world games).

Note that any new drives will need partitioning (from Disk Management) and formatting before they can be used.
