I am a novice when it comes to computers. I know just enough to get me into trouble. My current set up is this

Motherboard: AsRock 880Gm - LE FX
Processor: AMD Fx - 4100 Quad Core 3.60 GHz
Video Card - Nvidia GeForce GT 640
RAM - 8.0

I am looking to upgrade each of these but I am not sure where to start and if things need to be compatibe ( Mre like how to know if they are compatible) Any help would be much appreciated as I can use all the help possible.

Start with a psu or motherboard vice versa. 2 most important parts to start, following the gpu to utilize the psu and for better gaming performance.
Then I would get a new cpu, the one you have should hold up and not bottleneck your build.
So I would cpu then after upgrade your ram to some 1866 or 1600 with tight timings. A ssd boot drive also helps, just a 60g ssd with os on it, set a quota so it can't be filled, good stuff.

Getting into hot water keeps ya clean:). You might want to consider a new machine. Build or buy as PCs are inexpensive now. Upgrading the primary components might not be worth the cost or aggravation.
Just us though.
