CPU and GPU quickly overheating

Hi, so my CPU and GPU in my laptop have been overheating easily. I had to uninstall my graphics driver because my computer would shut down shortly after starting it up and logging on. I downloaded speedfan and saw that my temps go up 60-70c just from watching Netflix and Youtube.

This started happening after I applied thermal compound. I had done it many times before with no problems, but this time I switched from Arctic Silver 5 to Ceramique so I was wondering if Ceramique was the wrong thing to use. Along with this, the screws holding down the heatsink were stripped so I swapped them out, but the original ones had springs attached to them and the ones I used now do not because I didn't know where to find ones with springs. Would the lack of springs have something to do with the heatsink being held down poorly?

Lastly, I know my computer is old and the parts could just be failing, but it happened so suddenly after these changes that I was wondering maybe I just did something wrong. If I could fix it that would be great, if not I'm hoping I can afford to get a desktop in the next couple of months or so.

Generally speaking its best to try to use the same screws and things like that- replacing them with different parts is almost asking for trouble. Still, you could try tightening them and see if that helps. Also be sure that the heatsinks and fans are clean since dust buildup is a common cause of overheating.

How much paste did you apply and why did you do it? You shouldn't need to replace the old paste unless you are changing the cooler or CPU (if its removable). It is possible that you put on too much paste (its difficult to put on too little since you only need a drop or two). Thermal paste is really not a good conductor of heat and is only intended to help fill the small grooves in the CPU's IHS and the CPU cooler.
