I'm crossed between using the i5 4690 and doing a xeon 1231v3 build. Probably 75% gaming and the rest used between working my android apps using eclipse. I want to play BF4/Fallout-4 on Ultra settings but I'll upgrade once DX12 is out so I would like to keep the price down low. I already have all of the HDD's in the part picker and I'm crossed between cases. I like the NZXT S340 but I wonder how it would go with no optical drive. Inputs appreciated!

Quick glance at the build, you have an h97 chipset motherboard(no overclocking) and a "K" series Cpu(overclockable). Would you possibly be planning to overclock it in the future? If so, get a z97 chipset mobo, or if not, save the money and drop down to a slightly slower, quite a bit cheaper non-"K" CPu.

Quick edits for savings.

Same overall capabilities, but slightly cheaper. The drop in Cpu's won't be noticeable at all, but will save some money.

Might want to bump that 1600 RAM up to 1866 or 2133, with 2133 being the sweet-spot for your system.

Frequency vs. timings with Haswells.

Kits from Newegg vary in price but can be had for under $50 with good customer ratings: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007611%20600006069%20600006050%20600006142%20600559778&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=30

Great article and thanks for the input. I have no intentions of overclocking for now. Just want something to update my i7 Lynnfield 2.8 build from 6 years ago and play the next list of AAA games at high or ultra settings.

Would there be any benefit going with a Xeon setup to build apps or would the i5 suffice?

Going with a higher freq of RAM does not require one to OC or have the capability to do so...

It does, however: "Note1: Due to the configuration of chipset, each RAM will downgrade to DDR3 1600 with H97 series chipset."

Top of the chart.
