Hello,

I want to upgrade my Dell XPS 8500's default graphics card to GIGABYTE's Mini GTX 970 4GB. Will this card be fully compatible with my PC? (Will it fit? Will it get too hot inside? Will it work with my motherboard? Will it have enough power?

I have a 460W power supply and GIGABYTE's website says the required amount for the card is 400W. So will I be fine like that, or do I need to upgrade my power supply too? If so, what should I upgrade it to?

Here is some info on my PC:
Model: Dell XPS 8500
(Service Tag: GJLSNW1)
OS Version: Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Bios Version: A09
Current Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
Power Supply: 460W (XPS 8500 default)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers: Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
Motherboard: TXKR9 (Motherboard NW73C, DPK for Windows 8 Home)

Thank you!

Yes, upgrading to a 970 sounds great. Definitely upgrade that power supply so it will have enough power. Also I would personally check how much space your GPU would have as larger cards provide better cooling.

Ok thanks

You should just be able to swap cards . You will have to add a better power supply . The dell one is pretty cheap and the wattage not high enough .
A BIOS doesnt have graphics cards in it . Thats not what a BIOS does .
You will have to change the graphics drivers . Probably best you uninstall the ones for the GT 640 , then turn the comp off and swap cards . Once you have booted you can install the latest driver for the 970 .

Just check how long it is so you know the replacement will also fit the case

I fixed the links I think.. if you want to look at it again. Do you think I should get this card and upgrade the power supply too?

According to reviews, the xps 8500 fits a full size 7870 inside, so the 970 mini won't be an issue, although you probably won't have use of the gpu support, may even need to remove it entirely. Yes you should upgrade the psu. Good quality 550w are easy to find cheap enough.

Gpu support? What's that? Why would I need to get rid of it? (I'm a noob lol)

That is not what a BIOS does

Sooo... just get it through Amazon and send it back if it doesn't work, I guess?

I'm not really for AMD but if it's the only option, I'll go with it. What is the AMD equivalent to the GIGABYTE Mini GTX 970? (High performance, but low power... I want to run next-gen games in 1080p max settings 60fps.. haha) And I have $300-ish budget. Thanks!!

There is a problem related to bios and Maxwell gpus, but that's a legacy issue where there is an incompatibility as tea urchin has said. However, if Op has a uefi bios, there shouldn't be an issue. I installed an 8800GT 512 to a Dell 8400 which previously had an AMD x800 LE. The 8800GT 512 wasn't released when the 8400 was built and I didn't bother with a bios upgrade, that's a hassle with Dell units. Legacy bios. Being an Ivy-Bridge 3770, that desktop should be uefi, so won't need the white list to work with an upgrade gpu.
