Hey guys,
Need to build a workstation for work. Specs would be similar to what people would choose to build a high-end PC so I was hoping for insights.

Requirements:

  • - must have 6 core cpu
    - gtx 980 ti required
    - CPU should ideally be overclockable. Thus chassis should have good cooling. When running algos, cpu will be close to or at 100% utilization (all cores) for multiple consecutive hours. So overclocking should yield good benefits but cooling should be good too.
    - 16 gb ram, ideally 2400MHZ. If motherboard has only 2 ram slots, then a single 16gb module would be preferred over two 8 gb modules.
    - SSD
    - Mini itx. With AC wifi preferred.
    - Rebates should be ignore. If a $100 item has $100 rebate, it should be considered as a $100 item.

A part list I put together in 5 minutes is this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xLVCHx

Note that I simply sorted by price and picked the cheapest component I found fitting my requirements. I don't know any 'inner' details of quality, etc of the underlying components I choose in the partlist.

Also didn't add wifi or chassis fans to the list since I diddn't know which ones would fit.

Additionally, if the cpu I picked isn't the latest and there are skylake 6-core cpus out now, I would prefer to get those.

Thanks in advance.

So I'm going to start off by saying that you're build wasn't mITX, it was mATX, the difference is about 2 inches.
Anyway, heres the list. I picked a higher clocked 6 core (5930K) rather than the other one (5820K), because you aren't really gonna overclock in mITX without it getting really hot.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($459.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9DXi4 37.8 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.95 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock X99E-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA2011-3 Narrow Motherboard ($242.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($134.99 @ Newegg)...

What you have in the proposed build is a micro ATX build, not a mini ITX. If you want a true mini ITX rig, then there's a couple of ways you could go about doing that. But if you want micro ATX what you have is pretty decent but could use a few tweaks before I would call it a buy. Here's what I would get with those parameters:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($459.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9DXi4 37.8 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.95 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock X99E-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA2011-3 Narrow Motherboard ($242.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($82.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($77.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($113.98 @ Amazon)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Video Card ($649.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Inwin 901 Mini ITX Tower Case ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($103.86 @ Mac Mall)

You can go even smaller than that by going with an SFX case like the Silverstone RVZ02B and then adding an SFX power supply in the mix.

If you want to go micro ATX - a bit bigger but you will have a lot more choices of the types of components that you can use. here's what I would do:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($459.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H5 Universal 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($42.25 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock X99M Extreme4 Micro ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ($168.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($82.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($77.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($113.98 @ Amazon)
