I have an old Dell Poweredge 2950 server sitting in my garage. It has 2 Xeon 5150s, 8gig ram, new raid card... The thing is way too noisey to run in my house. So, I thought about taking out the Cpus and ram to build a new box.

I'm iching for a new project. I already have a Plex, minecraft, VPN server.. What do you guys think? What could I use these parts for?

You still end up with a quad core box that uses a lot of power and is slower than a current gen quad core. I just can't see the economics....

To reuse the CPUs and RAM, you would have to find an motherboard. You might find a HP ML350 or Z800, or a Dell T5500 that would be quiet enough. The costs for any chassis that can host those would be more than they are worth. Those CPUs are just dual core CPUs. Pull the RAID card and send it to an e-waste recycler.

Thanks for the reply Kanewolf.. I found a Supermicro X7DCA-L-YI001 Motherboard Dual LGA771 Socket that supports the Xeons and memory for $27. Ive even found a few Intel boards for under $100.

It would be a 2U chassis. Servers are usually picky about the fans -- minimum RPM etc

It is tough to let go. If those had been quad core CPUs I would have been more encouraging. With dual cores it just doesn't make sense.
