Looking to upgrade motherboard and processor, help requested please.

Hi people,

I've just ordered a new SSD(Samsung 850 Evo 500GB) and am looking to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I'd like to upgrade my motherboard (currently Asrock Z68 PRO3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard) and processor (currently i5 2500k), but to what is the question?

I'm under the impression that your OS license is tied to your motherboard, so I'd like to change my motherboard and SSD at the same time, then install Win10. I use my computer mainly for gaming (e.g. GTAV).

Budget is £400 for the MoBo and processor. Personal preference would be an Intel processor.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if the Windows on the Microsoft store is retail? I've read that the versions sold on a USB stick are retail. Not sure how true that is though.

So if I purchase a retail copy, I could leave Windows 7 on my current hard drive and install Windows 10 on my new one with my current motherboard and then upgrade my motherboard whenever I wish, would I need to re-install or reactivate Windows after I've installed the new motherboard?
