Hi,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my CPU (need a much stronger one, preferably from Intel i5-i7 series), motherboard (don't care from where) & possibly ram (don't care from where).

My budget is $250-$350 (and POSSIBLY $400)

Currently I have:

GPU: AMD Radeon R7 200 Series
CPU: AMD 760K Richland Quad-Core 3.8 GHz Socket FM2 100W AD760KWOHLBOX
Motherboard: MSI A78M-E35
Ram: DDR3 8GB something (don't know specifics)
HDD: 1TB Western Digital
PSU: Unsure, though I think it's 500-600 Watt

Thank you so much for suggestions!

it is locked so no overclocking which keeps the mobo pric down as well. to go with unlocked cpu would add a bunch to the cost. could be done with an i5-4690k if you re-use your ddr 3 ram

keep in mind some extra cooling will be needed for this one so add that cost in.anywhere from $30 to $100+ depending on what you chose to go with.

Everything else is transferable. You may need to contact Microsoft and explain that you are replacing the motherboard, not building another pc, if the windows key is tied to the old motherboard. They should issue a new key. Otherwise you'll probably have to purchase a new OS.

What's the perk of using this build as opposed to the others given? What makes each one special/better?

I would recommend you to upgrade your ram to DDR4 if you are willing to spend $400-$450.
If not, keep your 8gb of DDR3 ram and get these two (motherboard+cpu):
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157547&cm_re=asrock_anniversary-_-13-157-547-_-Product
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116991

However if you wish to overclock your CPU, you will need a different motherboard. Here is the one i'd buy:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130779&cm_re=z97-_-13-130-779-_-Product

All of this is around the lower end of you budget which will save you some money. If you do wish to use DDR4 ram and are willing to spend more than $400 let me know so I can help you out.
Good luck :D

intel sells two types of cpu a k cpu that can be overclocked and a locked cpu. the locked cpu is fixed at the speed it rated for. on the intel mb there three lines of mb. the b class (for biz) the h class for home and the z class for gamers and overclockers. the z mb will have the most bells and whistles.
4000x haswell cpu is 1150 pins.
newer skylake has 1151 pins and newer cpu with newer ddr4 ram.
in real world skylake is a little faster then the older haswell cpu.
skylake give you one or two more cpu upgrades before it goes end of life. haswell/brodwell is going end of life.

Okay - can somebody please pick out of all these and suggest the BEST option? I'm a noob, as I said, and I have no idea what would suite my gaming needs better. (Games like Rocket League, CS:GO, etc. as well as streaming them)

for the money i like the i5-6600 build i suggested. brings you totally up to date with current intel cpu. will give the longest usage before it needs to be updated.

the locked 4590 is fine as well if you wish to save the money. still a good cpu but already out dated by the skylake models

I7 power, i5 price. Full HT, so 8 threads will be of much more help in games like BF4 and newer AAA titles which will be using core count over single threaded performance because of rising complexity and things like compressed audio.

For the price, the Xeon 1230v3 runs circles around a skylake i5 in any multi core optimized game.

For $20 more you can move up to the 1241v3 which runs at 3.5GHz, same as the 4690k.
