Both SSD and HDD stopped being recognised by the BIOS without warning

This situation is driving me mad.

I just bought a bunch of parts for a new build (it's my first one), and after putting the system together, it booted up just fine. I am a newby, so I did have to reboot a couple while trying to figure out the BIOS. After rebooting a few times, however, the hard drives just simply stopped being recognised. I'm getting a message saying "no bootable device found" even though I have a samsung SSD and WD HDD installed. I haven't installed windows yet either. What's interesting, is that my disk drive also stopped being picked up, so I'm worried that my SATA ports died shortly after powering up for the first time. I do know that the BIOS picks up external thumb drives, however.

I have tried reverting all BIOS settings to their original state, I have (obviously) tried rebooting a few times. I have tried replugging and checking the SATA ports and connections on the motherboard. I have tried unplugging the drives. I have tried pretty much everything. I've also checked extensively online to see if anyone else has had my issue, but none have it quite the same. Either their BIOS didn't pick up the drives on the first start up, or the drives disappeared after using it for a while. I don't know of any scenarios where all drives and peripherals suddenly stopped being recognised prior to the installation of any software.

My specs are as follows:

i7 4790k processor
Gigabyte z79x-gaming-7 motherboard
Samsung 850 EVO SSD
WD caviar black 1tb HDD
Corsair CX 759m power supply
MSI gtx980ti gaming 6g gpu
16gb gSkill ripjaws X ddr3 1600mhz ram

I am in dire need of some information.

Welcome to the TH community, ArtymusPrime!

I'm sorry to hear about your detection issues with the drives after the upgrade! I'd advise you to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest SATA controller/chipset drivers from there. Another thing that might help with the recognition of the SSD & the HDD is resetting BIOS using one of the methods listed here: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
If that doesn't help, you should again go to the mobo's website, find your model and make sure you have the latest BIOS firmware update. You might also want to make sure that the SATA ports are enabled in the BIOS as well.

Hopefully, this will get your drives to get properly recognized by the system.
Keep me posted!

Thank you very much for the quick reply, my friend. Luckily, all the fix needed was a reset of the cmos. I don't know what I did, but it screwed something up before. Luckily all the drives reappeared after the reset, and everything went smoothly from then onwards.

Cheers
