This is my first post in the forum. I hope it's in the correct category. (I'm sorry if it isn't) Feel free to relocate it if that's the case.

I have an old Sony Vaio Laptop HDD (80 Gb) Toshiba HDD Model 2190 that I turned into an external USB drive via Sabrent External Case model: SBT-EKU25 (photos attached).
Every time I connect it to my PC (Win XP SP3 32bit) the tool-tip comes up saying "There was a problem installing this hardware". When I go to My Computer, the drive is not recognized neither as a External Drive nor a Removable USB Media. Furthermore, when I open the Device Manager, there is an exclamation sign next to it, and when I access to its properties, the device status is: "This device cannot start (Code 10)" (screen capture also attached)

Than you very much for your help! =D

Well, jsmithepa might have a point there. As mentioned 2.5" drives don't need an external power supply, but I've seen cases in which 2.5" drive don't work with enclosures without a power supply (which is a bit odd). If the drive is not spinning up as you've stated, then it might be a power issue indeed. Hook the HDD to a computer's motherboard via a SATA connection (or PATA/IDE if the drive uses that interface as @CountMike has mentioned) to see what happens. If it works fine, then it's the enclosure which is at fault. You could also try externally again via a SATA/PATA to USB adapter.
Hi Sophia and welcome to the community! :)

Basically this error code means that there's a problem with the device's driver and the OS can't communicate properly with it. Since you're using an external enclosure it's most probably a problem connected with its driver, which would mean that probably the same thing would happen no matter which internal drive you try with it. It's possible that you might need to install a separate driver for that external enclosure if it's a newer model, as Window XP is a pretty outdated OS and might not have the built-in driver needed in this case. To confirm all that, I'd suggest that you try the HDD and it's enclosure with a computer that has Windows 7 or a newer version, to see if the same thing happens.
It is possible that the enclosure might be faulty as well. To check that you should connect the HDD internally to a computer, via a standard SATA connection and if it's properly recognized and working without a hitch, then that will confirm that the issue is related to the enclosure.

Here's a link from Microsoft's KB with a bit more info on that error code and a possible solution on how to deal with it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/943104

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

I've already test it in Win7 on a Cyber Cafe and didn't work either, I check the vendor site and for this model (SBT-EKU25) there claim no driver is needed, here is the screencap:

I think there may be a problem directly on the HDD because I can't hear any noise coming from the case when connected

No, it doesn't need it. And about the jumper, I don't know. How do I find out? And where should this jumper go?
