Hi Everyone,

Still new to this site, think its my 3rd or fourth post, so forgive my ignorance. I have a desktop I built roughly 6 months ago. In the past two months its been randomly crashing, and the frequency of crashes feels like its been increasing.

Error Message
It usually pops up with a message something along the lines of "New hardware or software maybe be the cause of startup failure." It crashes while running goes to a split second bluescreen, then tries to boot. And gets stuck in the loop.

Temp Fix
I realized if I unplug all the peripheral devices, headset, mouse, and keyboard, its able to start. But only AFTER running the windows repair tool, and then unplugging and booting. 2 days ago I went though this process again and now the computer is noticeably slower. To the point where my 11" chromebook is faster than this budget desktop build.

Long Term Fix
I have no idea. I dont have an optical drive, I installed Windows 7 via a USB. Would upgrading to 8 help me? I would like to avoid 10, just because im a fan of Captain Jack Sparrow. Is it possible to get diagnostic tools onto a USB as well?

Im trying to major in computer science, so a reliable desktop is a requirement for me. Also finals week next week and my final coding project for the semester. Im in the first Intro Class to C++, if anyones curious, and its been a blast so far! Just started data structures =] Basically if you help me fix my PC Me love you long time!

PC Specs
Win 7 Ultimate x64
AMD 6300 6core @ 3.5
8gb RAM (2x Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB sticks)
ASUS M5-A78L-M (Motherboard)

1 3tb Seagate HDD for movies and random crap
1 250gb seagate - OS on this one
Antec 450 Watt PSU

If other info is needed any other info let me know

Solution
My first step would be a fresh install of Windows, the fact you had to run the repair to get it to start might indicate corrupted Registry files/entries. You could try the various 3rd party tools for fixing Windows/registry but it's really simpler to just do a fresh install of the OS and all your drivers than it is to try to attack it piecemeal.

Fresh install meaning wiping all the data on the computer as well?

Just the OS part, no need to wipe everything, unless you can back up your important files and just want to do a reformat on the OS drive just to be thorough. Generally you'd only want/need to do a complete wipe if you were battling a nasty virus/malware infestation.

A good 8 hours later I have a clean install, I backed up and deleted the old just cause. Thanks Grim. For now it seems to be running at 100%, fast as it ever was. Hopefully it stays like this :p

Glad it fixed the issues. You can google around for various "tune-up" tools that may help keep it running better long term, things like registry and driver cleaners and the like. But, all in all, never hurts to flush and start over ;-). Windows tends to get a collection of bad entries, old drivers, corrupt files, and the like, over time, especially if you install and uninstall a fair amount.
