in need to extend my wi fi range on my home

Need your advice - my home is about 2000 square feet. Currently my router is in the middle of the home. My wi fi range is a bit spotty at the very far reaches of my house. Two solutions I am looking at are: range extenders or access points - one at each end of the home.

With access points - can they be set up without running Ethernet cables through my attic or must access points be set up wired?

Any other suggestions on how to improve my range will be greatly appreciated.

As in something like 300mbps? No, as long as you get AP's that have gigabit ports on (like the rest of your network (presumed))
