Hi guys - i have a HP 700-311na desktop, which comes with a 500w psu (cant find the make/model number for psu)
Cant find the attach button, otherwise would have put what belarc advisor is saying
but the specs are:
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c04343334

with a i7 4790 cpu

and was wondering is a) the 500w enough

and b) would it be enough once i add a 240gb solid state harddrive along side other things such as an additional normal 2tb Hard drive as well as changing the graphics card to a GTX 970?

thanks

and I'd like to use it for hard core gaming

Solution

Once you have your 240GB SSD, 2TB HDD, and 970, what else will you need to upgrade? A 4gb GTX 970 is already pretty damn good. It can handle all the games at max 1080p. Even at 1440p you will need to lower settings just a bit. 550w is sufficent and the only upgrade I would ever make in the future with that build is probably more SSD space.

so is the 500w not enough?

i mean if im going to be changing it i might as well go for 650 and make sure i can upgrade in the future with out having to change the psu again

hi
how do i find this out? belarc advisor doesn't say.. and please be in detail i am a little novice
and its either PALiT GeForce GTX 960 JetStream 4GB GDDR5 or EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC GAMING ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5

For every one else... 550w just seems too little of an upgrade from 500w for me to change it..
would the 500w that i currently have be enough?

The EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC GAMING ACX 2.0 requires two 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

The Palit GeForce GTX 960 JetStream (4096MB GDDR5) requires one 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector.

You need to physically open your computer case to be able to determine if the PSU has the required number and types of PCI Express supplementary power connectors needed by the graphics card that you will be using.

My guess is that your PSU has only one 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector.

Belarc Advisor is useless for determining how many and what types of connectors a PSU has.

One of the graphics card options that was available for the HP ENVY 700-311na was the AMD Radeon R9 270 so that would mean that the Delta Electronics DPS-500AB-15 A PSU that is in your system was definitely capable of powering your system with a 150W TDP graphics card.

The R9 270 required one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector.

You should be able to use some models (i.e. models that require only one 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector) of the GeForce GTX 960 in your system without having to upgrade the PSU.

Thanks

So i'm presuming with out the upgrades the current setup with 500w is more than enough?
and it should do fine with 1 ssd and a gtx 960? i dont want to cause a blowout after a few months of intense gaming( or any damage)

p.s is the current psu of high quality?

System Power Supply Requirements for a single GeForce GTX 960
NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 400 Watt or greater system power supply. (Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor.)
the system power supply must also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 28 Amps or greater
the system power supply should also have at least one 75-Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector. There are some non-reference design cards that require two 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors (e.g. Gigabyte GTX 960 G1 Gaming 2 GB [GV-N960G1 GAMING-2GD REV.1.0], Inno3D iChill Geforce GTX 960 2GB Ultra) or one 150-Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector (e.g. EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2 GB [02G-P4-2966-KR], MSI GTX 960 Gaming OC 2 GB [GTX 960 GAMING 2G]).

Delta Electronics OEM 500W (DPS-500AB-15 A)
OEM: Delta Electronics
maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating: 35 Amps <===== More than sufficient
one 75-Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors <===== Sufficient
Ambient Temperature Maximum (i.e. without derating): 50°C
Modular Output Cables: No
Passes Official Intel Haswell Compliance Test: Yes

Delta Electronics is a Tier 1 power supply designer and manufacturer.
