this is the problem, at seemingly random points in use, the display and whole pc totally freeze. No input from mouse / keyboard work at all, which then requires a hard reset using the case buttons. If any sound played in the last few seconds before this, it continually repeats this until reset.

Any help/advice appreciated!

hope it all works out for you. If you have the ability to get the main set of IObit software in thier pro versions (by either buying or alternative) you should. It's a great set of tools. there are tons of programs from them but the main ones for system care and performance are:

Uninstaller (free)
Advanced SystemCare 9 Pro (paid/trial)
Malware Fighter Pro (I have v3.3 but there may be a newer version. would need to check on that) (paid/trial)
Smart Defrag 4 (also paid/trial I believe, but only for the advanced defrag features. would need to double check that)
Driver Booster (I have version 3 but there may be...

Please provide the following:
What is your current OS? (i.e. Windows 7 Professional 64bit or x64 (same thing))
What is your GPU? (graphics processing unit)
What antivirus/malware programs do you use?
Does this happen purely at random or more often when using a specific program or playing a specific game?
Have you tried using a PC solution program to scan and fix errors? (I recommend IObit Advanced SystemCare)
Have you checked for an update to your GPU?
Have you checked for an update to DirectX?
It could also be a program you installed that has messed up your system.
Also, since you said you have repeatedly hard shutdown your PC you may have some errors in your OS and would need to use a program like IObit Advanced SystemCare to scan for problems and fix them.
Make sure all of your drivers for everything in your PC are up to date.

win 8.1 (64b)
R9 380
AVG free version and malwarebytes
totally random, i leave pc just doing steam downloads sometimes and it happens, just without any sounds
no, i haven't tried any fix software, but i have lately done an SFC scan which found an error it wasn't able to fix, could this be it?

I will check for GPU/Dx updates now, then let you know later tonight if it happens still (i almost always get it atleast once a day)

Get rid of AVG and malwarebytes. Don't ever use crap like that (although malware bytes isn't too bad). Windows 8.1 has Windows Defender built in and works great. If you would like a secondary program try IObit Malware Fighter. It's free for the basic version or there is a trial, I'm not sure. But you can get the pro version for cheap or through alternative methods that I will not say here. Then use IObit Advanced SystemCare in trial mode to scan and fix errors. You can also use IObit Driver Booster in trial mode to scan for needed updates to drivers. And again if you like the programs either buy them or get them some other way. Also, if you browse the web alot and you use either Chrome or Firefox then get the AdBlock Plus addon/extension. It will save you from viruses from ads and make loading web pages faster.

You can use IObit Uninstaller and use the Power Uninstall mode to completely get rid of the two programs and everything having to do with them like leftover folders and files and registry that stay after a normal uninstall. it's completely free.

When you get the pro versions of any of these (especially Advanced SystemCare 9) it will come with a bunch of other programs that you can activate and install directly from the program itself that can be used for all sorts of different things.
