It is worth saying that I was experiencing very high temps for the h100i but couldn't ever find a problem. After tightening screws and reapplying thermal paste after the first month or so I managed to drops the temps a little but they still sucked. After about a year the problems had gotten worse so I decided to take another look, to my surprise there was some sort of green rust along the edges of the cpu cooler! Got it rma'd super fast and a replacement came. Temps dropped quite a bit but I wasn't feeling the small boost in performance I expected (got pretty unlucky on the cpu too, couldn't get a great oc). I fear there is a problem with the cpu so I figure that needs upgrading for sure. Should I go for an i7 or i5? what's the latest gen cpus, motherboards, etc. I believe there's new ram too?

I play games that my PC can run, so if the PC is better than I will play more hungry games. Currently playing CS:GO on low settings @1080p and BO3 on low settings @900p windowed.

Does anything else need upgrading? I'm unfamiliar if there's new gpu's out now, is mine outdated? bigger ssd? more ram? etc

**Worth sharing some other stuff about my PC that can be upgraded too but I don't think it needs it, so here goes:**

I'm running 3 monitors atm. I have a BenQ XL2411Z @144hz for gaming on and two other cheap 24 inches, one on each side. I think they are Dell ST2420L and Acer S240HLBID.

I have a pair of 2014 Astro A40s & mixamp

Zowie FK1

CM Storm Quickfire Rapid I

Steelseries QCK+

DXRacer chair

Corner desk

PC has custom red & black sleeved cables

The i7 4790K runs very cool (I use Cryorig H7A, haven't managed to spin it all the way up yet), great power use (idles super low, whole computer uses less than 100 watts), basically got every base...

Replace the Corsair unit completely. They are only so, so good. Don't mess around with malfunctioning CPU cooling! Have one too.
Maybe a air cooler? More processor is always better than less.

You've got a good rig, first I would look to would be newer GPU for gaming - 980TI is top of the line followed by the 980., after that I'd look to DRAM and kick it up to 2133 in a 2x8GB set - something like the GSkill Trident X or Ripjaws X. You've got a great i5 now and an i7 wouldn't show much improvement gaming wise, if having problems with the cooler, could go a 212 EVO or Cryorig H7 for a good air cooler that would work, if wanting to stay with liquid, might look at the Lepa EXllusion, been playing with one for over a month now and it's great ;)

With a limitless budget you'd be looking more along the lines of a 6700K CPU and 2x 980 ti GPUs.
-Ram is enough
-A 4k monitor would go nicely with 2x980 ti's
-Get at least a 250Gb SSD. There are some pretty big games out there.

As always, parts and prices can change weekly. Come back when you are ready to pull the trigger.

You are good on CPU side, switch to Air cooling as said by walt, maybe to cryorig H7.
For your setup, you need atleast a r9 390 or gtx 980. If you can afford a gtx 980ti,that would be amazing!
Anything else don't require an update as of now.

appreciate the reply. Which are the best cpu coolers now a days. the evo 212 and dh-14 ring a bell but are they still relevant?

Thanks for the reply. I agree that my processor in general is great but I feel like my one specifically was never great, always had problems with it. I'm thinking of upgrading to the newer i5 or i7, can you update me with the current market regarding them? From what I understand the latest cpus use new ddr4 ram so I would need to upgrade my ram if I upgrade the cpu right? Aswell as the mobo ofc.

Will look into the Cryorig and Lepa as I don't recognize their names. 212 evo I have a spare one lying around someone i think

Not looking to make an insaneee PC. The budget is unlimited, only if the parts are necessary as I said.

Monitor wise I would prefer to stick with my 144hz monitor over a 4k one for now. SSD definitely needs to be bigger, filled up the 120gb in the first month. Perhaps just going for a 1tbh ssd is worth a shout?

Limitless budget?
CPU: 6700K
MOBO: Some Z170 that supports sli (Asus Maximus VIII Ranger maybe)
Ram: 2x8GB of DDR4 2666mhz (or faster if you like)
GPU: 2 x 980ti's
PSU: 1000-1200w (good brand)
Everything else looks ok. Unless you want to make any changes. Cpu cooler, storage or monitors etc

Thanks for the reply. There's definitely something wrong with my cpu technically and I think it's on the edge of dying soon. If I upgrade to a new cpu which should I go for? i5 or i7? would I need new ram & a new mobo too.

Upgrading the gpu sounds like a good idea. I don't play many games that require high performance but that's because I cant with this rig, would like to try some new game.

Depends how much power you want. A single 980ti or lower a i5 6600k will do. If you want more power than a single 980ti can give i would suggest the 6700k

There isn't any earth shaking new with CPU coolers. Go with what ya know and are comfortable with.

For a system mainly for gaming a i5 as you already know is enough,i5 6600k is the next after haswell i5 4690k.
And honestly, this is not the right time to upgrade to skylake, changing motheboard and stuff, better get i7 4790k.Same board, cooler, ram.

Would you say that the 6600k is more future proof compared to the prev gen 4790k? If I'm spending money want it to last as long as it can. Im guessing the new i5's still don't have hyperthreading? I'm fine spending more money to get a newer motherboard etc if it will all last longer :)

You'll be fine with the haswell for next 3-4 years, there is no major difference between the haswell i7 4790k and i5 6600k in games,it's GPUs work, with that said, you can always overclock you CPU when needed.
Alot of people even today go with the i7 haswell instead of skylake if they are building a gaming, editing based PC.
Intel releases new socket CPUs every 1-2 years,DDR4 and DDR3 RAMs performance are basically the same, no benefit in switcing to skylake for now,in your case.

No such thing as 'necessary' for a gaming PC ;)

I'd start off with nothing more than a single 980ti.
That should run the latest games at 1080@144hz on max, or close to.
The rest of your system should be fine for awhile.

The i7 4790K runs very cool (I use Cryorig H7A, haven't managed to spin it all the way up yet), great power use (idles super low, whole computer uses less than 100 watts), basically got every base covered for future even if you suddenly decided to be a hard core video editor. 1150 motherboards are well vetted, no doubt which are usable and durable, inexpensive. I don't need it, was fine on i5-2500k, but wife wanted a new system so I gave her mine and upgraded (isn't that how it's supposed to work?). Only got it because, probably like you, wanted to know I was covered in the CPU department; though having it I know it's a bit of overkill. If you want to spend the extra $100, then go right ahead (I did!).
