I just built my first PC and it has been working great the past few weeks, and I got a new SSD so that I could put some of my steam Games onto it. My motherboard knows it's supposed to boot from the HDD inside the PC first, but whenever my SSD is plugged into the usb port, the motherboard all of a sudden doesn't know what it's supposed to boot from, it seems, and it just gives me a black screen. Basically these are the situations...
1. When I turn on the pc with only the hdd connected, everything boots up normally
or
2. When I turn on the pc with the hdd connected and ssd connected externally, it doesn't boot from hdd and it gives me a black screen
Why would just plugging the ssd externally cause it to not boot up correctly?
sorry if I sound confusing, I'm happy to explain it more if need be

Welcome to the community, Ryan!

Does the SSD have an OS installed onto it? If it does, you could be encountering an OS confusion somehow even through the USB connection (since the SSD is in an enclosure). I'd suggest you to go to the BIOS and check the settings. Make sure that the boot priority is properly set to booting from the HDD first. If you have the USB ports before the HDD as a boot option, it might explain why you get a black screen and you're unable to boot properly when the SSD is connected to the system.
If that doesn't help, you can try resetting BIOS using one of the methods listed here: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
It will get your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you'd need to reconfigure them...

Hope this helps. Keep me posted! :)
